Collard & Rosenblatt to Present 20 Minutes of A Princess Story
Elspeth Collard and Sam Rosenblatt, also known as Collard & Rosenblatt, will stream fifteen minutes of their new Theatre for Young Audiences show, A Princess Story, in the New Works Showcase presented by Marymount Manhattan College’s Musical Theater Association. Having previously presented their stand-alone song, “My Person” (performed by Kyra Anthony in the concert, originally performed by Gabrielle Carrubba), in the inaugural New Works Showcase, Collard & Rosenblatt were thrilled to be asked back to participate again.
Marymount Manhattan’s Musical Theater Association, an all inclusive club at MMC that brings theater arts to all students, regardless of major, connected the writing team with Tori Hersant, a senior at MMC who will be receiving her BA in Acting as well as in Directing for the Stage and Writing for the Stage this spring, along with six very talented student actors: Jillian Smith, Alondra Olmo, Angelo Harrington II, Qetsiya Babineaux, Sarah Faenhle, and Melina Walko. The team will present a twenty minute excerpt from the ninety-minute show, including four original Collard & Rosenblatt songs.
A Princess Story defies and denies the “damsel in distress” trope, choosing instead to put the princess front and center as the main heroine of the tale. Following Princess Annalise in a quest to slay a dragon, our story features an LGBTQ+ love story, a dynamic pair of strong leading female characters, and a boy band of knights.
The excerpt will be presented alongside three other new works: I Don’t Deserve To by Jackie Leon, Two Thousand Miles by Alyssa Williams, and An Average British Evening by Chamberlain Walls and Avery Britt. All four shows will be streamed for free on the Musical Theater Association Facebook page on Monday, November 23rd.
Elspeth Collard & Sam Rosenblatt are a female writing team who met at the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at NYU Tisch, where they received their MFAs. They’ve written over sixty songs together, as well as two musicals (A Princess Story and Twenty-Six Percent). They prioritize writing stories with women at the helm, hoping to illuminate queer experiences and end the stigma surrounding mental health. Both are members of the Dramatist Guild and Maestra. www.collardandrosenblatt.com
